The fair value of each year's grant is determined on the grant date and expensed on a straight-line basis over the vesting period. The expense for 2009 reflects this year's portion of the share grants over the previous four years (2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009), whereas the expense for 2008 reflects that year's portion of share grants for the three years 2006, 2007 and 2008. 4 Under the GRO program, all retirees are allowed to retain shares which have been granted to them and normal vesting conditions apply. Peter Wakkie's service period ended with his retirement on December 31, 2009. The share-based compensation expense related to the service performed by Peter Wakkie during 2009 was €551,000. In addition, an amount of €1,283,000 was recognized, representing the remaining unamortized expense on the non-vested portion of GRO shares granted to him, as his service period ended with his retirement. 5 Pension costs are the total net periodic pension costs.
