It operates grocery stores in four states under the names of Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets. In December 2009, Ahold announced that Giant-Cariisie would acquire 25 Ukrop's Super Markets, expanding its presence in Virginia. Giant-Cariisie continues to grow its business through acquisitions, new store openings, and innovative format development. Identical sales excluding gasoline increased 2.2 percent in 2009, compared to 4.7 percent in 2008. Giant-Cariisie continues to grow in a competitive market by offering quality products and services and running effective promotional activities. During 2009, the company further improved its price positioning. Operating income In 2009, operating income decreased $15 million or 6.4 percent to $218 million. Price reduction initiatives resulted in volume growth and an increased number of customers visiting our stores. Increased employee benefits costs, impacted by reduced turnover of store personnel, including those related to health and welfare, were partially offset by cost efficiencies and cost savings initiatives. Results were impacted by $1 million of restructuring and related charges and by $4 million from a release of insurance provisions.
