In 2001, Ahold reorganized its corporate functions in the U.S. in order to segregate retail trade and food service operations. The financial information relating to these corporate functions is allocated to retail trade or food service, as appropriate. The comparative segment information for 2000 was retroactively adjusted to reflect this change. The accounting policies used for the segments are the same as the significant accounting policies used for the consolidated financial statements as described in Note 2. Performance of the segments is evaluated based on operating income. The Company accounts for intersegment sales and transfers as if the sales or transfers were to third parties at current market prices. Sales are attributed to countries based on the location of the store or distribution location.
