EL SALVADOR
With over 2,400 stores and 1999 sales of
Euro 10.5 billion, Ahold is growing rapidly in Europe.
In The Netherlands, it has six store chains with
1,750 outlets including supermarket leader
Albert Heijn. Ahold also holds a 73% interest in
Schuitema. In Portugal, Ahold is co-owner of super
market chain Pingo Doce and Feira Nova hypermar
kets. In the Czech Republic, Ahold operates the
Mana supermarkets, the Prima mini-hypermarkets
and the Hypernova hypermarkets. Ahold is also fur
ther developing its operations in Spain and Poland.
In December 1999, Ahold announced a 50/50 joint
venture with the ICA Group, Scandinavia's largest
food retailer with 3,100 stores and sales of Euro 6.7
billion.
Ahold operates over 400 stores in Latin
America. It has joint ventures with strong local
partners in various countries with 1999 sales of
Euro 3.5 billion. In Brazil, Ahold is co-owner of
food retailer Bomprego. In Argentina, Ahold is
joint-owner of supermarket chain Disco and in
Chile, Peru, Paraguay and Ecuador of the Santa
Isabel supermarkets. In December 1999, Ahold
and La Fragua, Central America's leading food
retailer, started a 50/50 joint venture in
Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras with 119
stores.
Ahold operates 80 TOPS supermarkets in
Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Sales in 1999
amounted to Euro 0.5 billion. In 1999, Ahold
restructured and reorganized its Asian opera
tions. Future focus will remain on Thailand and
Malaysia where Ahold already holds strong
positions and can expect further profitable
growth.
