Our highly decentralized organization permits us to gear all our
activities toward the needs of the local consumer. In addition, the
company has a clearly articulated long-term vision, as well as a
proven ability to consistently produce higher results. To realize our
goals in new areas as well, we are allocating all the necessary know-
how and capital, while seeking to utilize the advantages of scale
w herever possible. In this way, we are seeking to unlock new areas
of potential, for ourselves and for our local partners.
These ambitious efforts at home and abroad demand much
commitment on the part of our 140,000 employees. Our challenge
is to provide the customer with the most personalized, efficient
service possible, while also making best use of the growing advan
tages of international scale. To fully achieve both of these goals and
ensure a healthy future for us all, our organization must retain a
strong feeling of coherence, of identity, of solidarity. We must learn
from one another, remain committed, and not become complacent
about our success.
Cees H. van
President
On behalf of my colleagues, and for myself, I would like to thank
you, our customers, suppliers, employees and shareholders, for
your confidence and support.
We achieved significant progress in all areas last year. Though the
extent and speed of change can be unsettling, we are doing our best
to specify our goals and challenges and we are encouraged by the
considerable flexibility and resourcefulness shown by so many of
our employees. For those who have more difficulty finding their
place in the sometimes complex process of change we are ready to
provide whatever help we can along the way.
Ahold is making great strides toward international leadership in
its profession. It is this vision which we are all pursuing with the
utmost conviction, in the interests of all concerned with the
company.
