Milestones in 1995
In the US, Ahold USA acquires the May fair supermarket chain (28 stores) and eight other
supermarkets adjacent to Edwards' market area. Giant increases sales while opening eleven
new stores.
Albert Heijn makes great progress in revamping its store organization in The Netherlands,
taking full advantage of the new Today for Tomorrow' distribution system. Stores are grouped in
clusters, and new stores offer various forma ts customized to the needs of their local community.
Ahold begins its development in Southeast Asia by signing a cooperative agreement in Indonesia,
and opening an Ahold Asia Pacific office in Singapore. In March 19%, joint venture contracts
were signed in Malaysia and Singapore.
Ahold doubles its activities in the Czech Republic by taking over 52 stores. Additionally, Ahold
launches a joint venture with German retailer Allkauf to develop various store formats in Poland.
Ahold's Portuguese joint venture, Jerónimo Martins Retail, realizes sales increases of 10 and
40% at its Pingo Doce supermarket chain and Feira Nova hypermarkets, respectively.
