An Overview of Ahold
With some 75,000 employees and
$8 billion in annual sales, Ahold ranks
as The Netherlands' largest food re
tailer, the fifth largest foreign operator
in the U.S. supermarket business, and
one of the 50 largest foreign investors in
the U.S., according to Forbes Maga
zine's annual survey of international
business. Ahold operates in four
sectors:
Retail Trade - The Netherlands
Over 650 Albert Heijn supermarkets,
Etos drugstores and Alberto wine and
liquor shops, four general distribution
centers, one flower distribution center,
five produce distribution centers and
four fresh meat packing centers.
Retail Trade - United States
Over 325 stores operated by three
strong regional supermarket chains,
the BI-LO chain of discount super
markets in the Carolinas and Georgia,
the Giant Food Stores chain ser
ving Pennsylvania, Maryland, West
Virginia and Virginia and the First
National Supermarket chain, located in
Ohio, Connecticut, New York, New
Hampshire and Massachusetts.
Food Production
An industrial bakery, processed meat
plants, coffee roasting and other dry
grocery production and packaging,
wine bottling operations, and a sherry
house in Spain, all supplying Ahold
chains as well as outside customers.
Restaurants, Institutional and
Recreational Activities
AC Restaurants in The Netherlands,
Belgium and West Germany, several
non-retail food distribution services,
and some recreational activities.
